Social Youth Engagement Programme engaging over 2,500 young people per year.
Top Tip...
It can be tempting to give as much detail as possible to sell your idea but sometimes too many words can be overwhelming. Win people over by making your idea easy to understand.
Myself and a project team who I have created plan to run a twice a week youth club that will engage young people in positive activities aimed at helping them develop in a holistic way. This project will ensure that young people who are unable to access main stream services due to religious, social and physical barriers will be able to access our project by removing the barriers to participation. The project will be split up into the following parts:
Weekly Youth Clubs
Young people will be enticed to attend the youth club by offering over 50 different activities including indoor sports, outdoor sports, arts and crafts, IT, games
consoles, pool table tennis etc.
Developmental Workshops
Once the young people attend the youth club sessions they will be offered various developmental workshops that will engage them in the following themes:
• Conflict Resolution
• Personal Development
• Teamwork and Leadership
• Drugs Awareness
• Anti Crime
• Enterprise
• First Aid
• And Many More
Qualifications
Young people who attend the workshops will often be able to achieve a qualification for successfully attending and completing the workshop. Qualifications will range from AQA awards to First Aid Qualifications.
Social Trips
Young people who attend a certain number of workshops will be able to attend fun, social trips that will encourage them to attend the workshops. These trips will include teamwork and leadership days, theme park trips, ice skating and bowling etc.
Volunteer Opportunities
Young people will be offered volunteer positions within the project to help them develop their skills. Opportunities include:
• Project Management Committee - this is where will we will train future community leaders
• Volunteer Youth Workers
• Project leaders – young people will be given opportunities to run their own small projects within the youth club such as leagues, trips and workshops
Project Management Committee
Young people will be able to join the project management committee where they will be take charge of the project and learn skills in project management, finance management, fundraising, marketing, IT and administration.
Overall this project aims to engage over 2,500 young people per annum and is desperately needed as very few organisations engage young people with religious and social barriers to participation and therefore this project will engage the hard to reach groups that are at risk. We aim to achieve the following outcomes:
• Over 2,500 young people engaged per year.
• Over 250 young people to achieve a qualification or accredited award
• Over 100 volunteer opportunities made available
This project will also help:
• Increase the number of young people in employment and attending further education
• Reduce the number of young people engaging in anti social and criminal activity in the locality of the project.
• Reduce conflicts between certain groups of young people.
• Increase the number of young people who are in leadership positions
We have strong project management team in place who are able to begin implementing parts of the projects as soon as funding is confirmed.
We are confident with the team and support we have from experienced advisors that we will make this project a huge success and an example for other similar projects in the future.
We have highlighted a few concerns and stated how we will address them:
Will the project be sustainable after the £20,000 funding has been depleted?
One of the skills of the senior youth worker will be to be experienced in community and grant fundraising. The senior youth worker will devise a fundraising plan with our project team to help raise funds to make sure the project is sustainable.
Child Protection
We will ensure that the whole project has had a risk assessment carried out for each and every activity.
All volunteers and staff working with young people will have had to had an enhanced CRB check carried out before undertaking work with the project.
All volunteers, staff and project team will be trained on child protection and health and safety.
We will also as part of the project planning process identify any concerns and work with our advisors to address them.
My team has carried out research and identified the need for this project. We have also been running this project as a pilot which has proved to be extremely successful with over 100 young people attending each session. We have learnt a lot from this pilot and will integrate what we learnt with this project.
I have also created a strong project team consisting of people with key skills that will help make this project a success. We have the following in our team:
Imran Mistry – Project Head – Is currently at University studying for a youth work degree. Is a trustee of 2 charities that work with young people in social and developmental projects.
The rest of the team consist of 14-21 year olds who have skills in project management and wish to develop these further.,
The project team will be advised my one of my mentors who has set up 4 successful charitable organisations and is currently working as Head of Youth Services for a large national charity.
Overall this project is devised by speaking to young people in consultation meetings. This project Is devised by young people for young people. We will also continue to meet young people, parents and community members to evaluate the project on a regular basis so that we can constantly improve the project.
